Odgovor, naravno, ovisi o vrsti galeba o kojoj je riječ. Npr. najstariji riječni galeb Larus ridibundus živio je 30 godina i 7 mjeseci, dok je kod sredozemnog galeba najstarija ptica opažena nakon 20 godina i 11 mjeseci (vidi tabicu u prilogu). Međutim, kao pravilo možemo uzeti da galebovi mogu u prosjeku živjeti više od 20-ak godina što ih svrstava u dugoživuće ptice.

Gore navedene podatke ne bi trebalo pomiješati s mortalitetom unutar populacije jer se odnose na jedinke. U prosjeku je vjerojatno da 70% mladih galebova neće doživjeti spolnu zrelost (tj. preživjeti prvih 2-5 godina), nakon čega se mortalitet odraslih jedinki bitno smanjuje.
